Owning a small business is risky, which is why proper insurance coverage is so important for these entrepreneurs to protect them from costly losses.

According to Forbes Advisor, the average monthly costs for small business coverages are:

  • General liability: $42
  • Business owners policy (BOP): $57
  • Professional liability: $61
  • Workers’ compensation: $45
  • Commercial umbrella: $75
  • Cyber liability: $145
  • Commercial auto: $147

Of these coverages, BOP tends to be the most popular, since this kind of policy often bundles general liability, commercial property and business interruption insurance. Many business owners find it is cheaper to buy one of these bundled insurance policies than to stack individual, separate policies.

Of course, there are several factors that determine what the right coverage for a particular business may be, including the industry the business is in, the size of payroll and annual revenue, the number of employees, location, building size and age, coverage amounts and the company’s claims history.

Each year, Forbes Advisor ranks the top insurers for each sector based on criteria including the number of customer complaints as well as Forbes consumer sentiment index to determine the best of the best. In the slideshow above, we’ll look at the insurers they ranked as the best for small business coverage in 2025.
