Since launching his YouTube channel in September 2021, Prasath Parthiban has amassed about 16,500 followers and more than 1.1 million views. Parthiban was named one of PropertyCasualty360's 2025 Insurance Luminaries.

Prasath Parthiban has been in insurance for 16 years. He currently serves as assistant vice president of Guidewire Implementation at Sompo International. With certifications in Guidewire, agile methodologies, data flow, and XML, he has a high-tech background. In addition, he has worked in many areas of insurance, with an emphasis on commercial and specialty insurance.

For the last four years, Prasath has maintained a YouTube channel called the P&C Insurance Helpline, where he makes videos that communicate some of the most complex concepts in insurance through simple language. The effort netted Parthiban more than 16,000 subscribers, and the honor of being selected as a PropretyCasualty360 Insurance Luminary in 2025.

Here, Parthiban discusses how some of his videos logged over 90,000 views each, and how his channel has received over one million total views.

Question: Why did you start your YouTube channel?

Prasath Parthiban: Often, people choose insurance based only on the premium. The problem is that when a claim comes up, they often have gaps in their coverage. This is why I started the YouTube channel: I wanted to help people and break the misconception that insurance is a complex topic.

About 16 years ago, I was listening to Guidewire’s chief executive officer talk about things like loss ratio and expense ratio. I asked my colleague if he understood all of these terms, and he didn’t. In insurance, we use a lot of specific terms, so when you have a conference, only 20% of the audience understands. The other 80% are like, “Oh, this is something like rocket science, we don’t need to understand.”

That’s what motivated me.

I am the kind of person who is always curious to learn things. My father is a retired mathematics teacher. My mother is a retired professor. By default, I have an interest in teaching.

PC360: How have people responded to your YouTube content?

PP: The most fulfilling thing is newcomers. “Sir, I got into the industry only because of you. I went through your videos and I’ve learned everything, and it helped me get a job.” That is more fulfilling — helping people get a job.

Other people say, “Hey, your insurance videos are easy to crack.” One company even incorporated my YouTube channel into their training curriculum. Even though I am doing this free of cost, they are trying to eliminate cost for their company.

The feedback is heartwarming.

PC360: What made you decide to supplement your videos with quizzes?

PP: I am a big believer in consistency. If I do something every day for 10 minutes, then I can see a big difference at the end of the year.
So what I thought was: Why can’t I put out a quiz question every day? Basically, what I do is ask a question on LinkedIn, then I give three options. At the end of the day, I answer the question with a 1-minute YouTube video.

The last three years, I’ve been doing it consistently every day. Assume 200 weekdays a year, now 600 days, so my followers have learned 600 concepts. My intention is to teach them in small bites so they don’t get overwhelmed.

PC360: Is there a video that’s your personal favorite?

PP: I have over 450 videos, and I put the same amount of effort into each of my videos, without any doubt. But my personal favorites are the reinsurance-related videos. Then there are some videos related to admitted and nonadmitted carriers. People have a good hold on homeowners. We all have homes; we all have insurance. But when it comes to specialty lines, surety bonds, inland marine insurance, I myself get happy when I make those videos because that kind of content is not available on the market. Plus, it’s very tough to make these ideas simple. So those are the topics that I feel happy about.

PC360: What major trends are shaping the insurance industry right now?

PP: There are a couple of things. As I mentioned, I am inclined toward commercial insurance and specialty lines. An agent comes to us, and one customer needs commercial auto, they need workers’ compensation, they need different kinds of policies. With the traditional policy administration system, we have to create separate policies for each line of business, even though it’s only one customer.

Now, many customers are moving toward something like an underwriting workbench. Instead of having to create one submission for one customer, even if they need three lines of business, you get the current total premium with just one submission. Instead of underwriters having to create separate policies and manually reconciling the premiums, underwriting workbench creates one policy that incorporates all the lines of business. This eliminates a lot of cumbersome, manual processes.

This will help not just the underwriters, but it will help the agents who don’t have to merge different policies together. It will also help customers by eliminating manual processes that can introduce errors.

PC360: What advice do you have for people entering the insurance industry?

PP: As industry long-timers retire, there are many opportunities to get in. For people who do get into insurance: Make sure you always ask, “Why?” about anything you are asked to do. Ask the questions and get the answers.

Identify your area of interest and work so that you don’t feel like you’re working, you feel like you’re enjoying what you do. The YouTube channel is a very good example. I started this four years back. Mine is a non-monetized channel, which means I don’t intend to get back a single penny. For the last four years, I did not miss posting a quiz question or a video because it’s my passion.

Identify your passion and work on it so that your work can be adding value to others and you will not burn out yourself.
