A new report from Resume Now suggests a growing divide in the American workplaces: while AI adoption is accelerating, employee training and policy clarity might be lagging far behind — leaving businesses exposed to compliance risks.

The AI Compliance Report, based on a January 2025 survey of 1,023 U.S. workers, shows that 66% of employees are now using AI tools at work. Just half the respondents, however, said that their organizations’ AI usage policies were clear, and 57% admitted to using AI in ways that might violate those policies.

Even though most companies do provide AI guidelines, employees are often left confused. "AI is transforming how we work, but without proper guidance, even well-meaning employees can misuse it," the report warns.

The problem isn’t just policy ambiguity — often there’s a training gap. Nearly half (43%) of workers said they needed more education on how to use AI effectively, and 47% felt underprepared to handle employer-provided AI tools. The study’s authors warn that a lack of preparedness could lead to inconsistent performance, missed opportunities, or even disciplinary consequences.

Despite all the frustrations and risks, employees seem to recognize that AI has many profound upsides: 85% of workers say it boosts productivity, and 40% report significant gains. That makes solving the compliance and training gap not just a risk-mitigation measure but a growth opportunity.

Who should lead the charge? According to the report, most workers believe AI policies should fall under the purview of IT, not HR. With 58% reporting a preference for tech-first approaches to compliance, companies may need to rethink how they structure their governance teams.

To close the gap, the study’s authors recommend companies invest in clear, accessible training and revise AI policies in collaboration with IT, legal, and HR. For workers, staying informed and asking questions is essential.

AI tools can be transformative — but only companies that pair adoption with education will truly reap them.
