Businesses in virtually every industry have exposure to cloud systems, whether through operational technology networks, software, data storage solutions, and beyond.

What many organizations fail to see, however, is their connectivity with cloud systems represents a significant cyber risk.

Cloud systems encompass clouds, cloud computing, cloud services, and cloud platforms. While related, they each represent distinct concepts. Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services provided through the internet ranging from servers to data storage, to networking, software and analytics. Cloud computing architecture, used to deploy cloud services, comes in three main forms: public, which are owned and operated by a third party that manages the access of multiple users; private, which serve a single business or organization; and hybrid, which share data and applications among public and private clouds.

The “cloud,” a blanket a term that applies to all types of cloud systems collectively, has become popular due to its flexibility, scalability and perceived security. Organizations should be aware of the risks that exist with the utilization of the cloud, however.

The slideshow above illustrates five cloud-risk blind spots that organizations should strive to understand and manage.
