In most U.S. states men pay more for auto insurance than women due to a higher likelihood of being involved in fatal crashes, according to a report by Zebra.
The number of male crash deaths for nearly every year from 1975 to 2022 was more than twice the number of female crash deaths, the data showed, resulting in men now paying more for car insurance in 38 states.
“Back in 2018, women paid an average of $10 more nationally for car insurance,” Zebra said in the study. “Now, in 2025, they pay about $33 dollars less. “
The current averages for annual premiums are $2,184 for men and $2,151 for women. Meanwhile, seven states including Minnesota, California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Montana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania don't consider gender as a rating factor.
“The states with the highest difference between what men and women pay on average are Idaho, Missouri, Texas and Wyoming, which all have an increase of 4% to 5% for men,” Zebra said. “This amounts to an annual increase between $59 and $140. The four states and Washington D.C. where women pay more than men are Florida, New York, Oklahoma and Oregon.”
The amount of difference paid can vary significantly between states from a $1 difference to a near 5% increase.
Meanwhile, what consumers pay for full coverage auto insurance in 2025 also depends on the type of vehicle they drive, according to a report by Bankrate. On average, U.S. drivers pay $2,678 per year, or $223 per month, for full coverage.
“The price and availability of parts, cost of labor, statistical likelihood of accidents, how much damage your vehicle could cause during an accident and the vehicle’s safety and crash prevention features could all influence how much you pay for coverage,” Bankrate said. “Your rate may also be higher or lower based on multiple factors unique to you, including your driving history, where you live and the type of coverage you need.”
