As of July 9, the death toll from devastating flooding in central Texas has climbed to at least 111, with more than 173 still missing. In addition to these casualties, those in the area are also dealing with property damage and economic impacts that Accuweather estimates could be between $18 billion and $22 billion.

Many businesses and organizations have stepped up to help those impacted by the flash flooding, including insurers Nationwide and USAA.

On July 7, the Nationwide Foundation announced it would donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross to support flood recovery. The Nationwide Foundation is a non-profit organization to which Nationwide Insurance companies donate. The foundation was created in 1959 and has reportedly contributed more than $700 million to non-profits since 2000.

"Our hearts are with the individuals and families impacted by the devastating floods in Texas," Kirt Walker, Nationwide CEO and Chairman of the Nationwide Foundation said in a release. "The Nationwide Foundation is making an additional contribution to the American Red Cross disaster relief fund to offer needed support at this difficult time."

San Antonio-based USAA has committed $500,000 in grants to help with search and recovery efforts in the wake of the Texas floods. The company will also activate employee volunteers to help in affected communities alongside Team Rubicon, which is a veteran-run disaster response organization.

“The destruction and loss we are seeing in Texas is heartbreaking, and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected, especially the families of those who have lost loved ones and those who are still waiting to hear news,” Juan C. Andrade, president & CEO of USAA, said in a release. “We have been part of this community for more than 100 years and we will show up with action, compassion and a willingness to help our neighbors and our members recover and rebuild. We are grateful to first responders for their ongoing and tireless efforts.”

Recipients of USAA’s donation include the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country, Texas Search & Rescue, the Red Cross and the Salvation Army.

“Our mission to serve includes supporting the communities where we live and work. Service is in our DNA, and this is where the USAA family shows its heart,” Andrade continued in his statement. “This weekend’s events are a reminder of how quickly lives can change and how important it is to support one another whenever and however we can.”
