Travel disruptions have been on the rise this year: conflict in the Middle East, air traffic controller shortages and tech outages in the United States, extreme weather everywhere.

More travelers are taking out higher-end travel insurance policies as a result, according to research from Reuters.

From January to April, there were 32% more requests for travel insurance quotes compared to the same period last year, according to InsureMyTrip, an online travel insurance broker.

Europeans have increased their purchases of travel insurance this summer by 3% compared to last year, according to data from Allianz. And Squaremouth, a travel insurance marketplace, says it has seen a 34% year-over-year increase in purchases of “cancel for any reason” protection.

The Trump administration’s travel bans and immigration crackdown have also left international travelers worried. CIBT, which provides visa and immigration guidance, has seen 50% more inquiries since November from companies preparing to send their employees to the U.S.

Destinations have also started offering parametric coverage. For example, Marriott Bonvoy now offers parametric weather insurance when booking its villas or waterparks. The insurance automatically pays out in case of a rainy day.

Sensible Weather, a parametric provider, says its weather insurance was added to 30% of theme park bookings and 10% to 15% of higher-end accommodation bookings last year.
