The prospect of driving around unknown areas can make even the most seasoned traveler nervous. The ease of navigating an area depends on several factors, like the area’s road signs and markings, the layout of the roads, the number of intersections, local traffic laws and rush hour traffic surges.

DiscoverCars.com recently surveyed nearly 6,000 customers to determine which states and countries are the easiest for drivers to navigate. They asked these drivers to score the ease of navigating the roads in places they have visited on a scale of 1 to 10.

New Zealand was the highest-ranked country in the survey with an overall score of 9.08. It was followed by Cyprus (8.83), Australia (8.77), Spain (8.73) and Germany (8.67).

Worldwide, the cities drivers consider the easiest to navigate include:

  • Auckland, New Zealand: Drivers said the roads are well-signposted and maintained, making them easy to navigate.
  • Paphos, Cyprus: Drivers said the roads are quiet, well-marked and easy to navigate, which makes for a stress-free drive.
  • Sydney, Australia: Drivers were impressed by Sydney’s great signage and modern roads.
  • Melbourne, Australia: Respondents complimented the city’s well-planned road network and clear signage.
  • Madrid, Spain: Drivers appreciate Madrid’s organized road system and clear signage.

In the slideshow above, we’ll look at the U.S. states drivers ranked as the easiest to navigate according to DiscoverCars.com’s survey.
