Over the last three decades, the median wealth gap between homeowners and renters has climbed 70%, according to The Urban Institute. This unprecedented indifference has made it difficult for many to go from renting to purchasing their own home, which can impede efforts to build generational wealth.

To counter the wealth gap that holds many back from homeownership, Progressive Insurance has announced the launch of its new initiative, Open the House. The program is not only meant to provide support during the purchasing process, but seeks to empower homeowners to stay in their homes long-term and build wealth through that real estate by providing resources and financial literacy tools.

As part of this effort, Progressive has also launched The UpPayment program to help first-generation buyers afford a down payment for their new home. This grant program will provide a $13,500 grant toward the purchase of a home for up to 100 applicants.

For purposes of the program, Progressive defines a first-generation homebuyer as an individual who has had no ownership interest in another property in the three years preceding the purchase of the home as well as at least one of the following requirements:

  • No parent of the homebuyer has had an ownership interest (sole or joint) in the last three years preceding the purchase of the home.
  • The applicant has aged out of foster care, or
  • The applicant has become emancipated.

The insurer reports that it contributed over $7 million last year to help families achieve homeownership, and this program is an expansion of that effort.

"We believe homeownership should be an achievable goal for more Americans," Tricia Griffith, chief executive officer at Progressive, said in a release. "Progress is at the heart of everything we do, and we're committed to providing first-generation homebuyers with guidance and support they need to help navigate the homebuying journey with confidence. By providing access, education, and financial support, we aim to help individuals and families build lasting financial security. Through strategic collaborations and tailored resources, our mission is to advance progress in the home by strengthening families and communities for the future."

In addition to the UpPayment program, Progressive created a video-driven series called “Recipe for Homeownership” featuring conversations about homeownership and financial wellness and will provide online home appraisal help for those struggling with the process.

The insurer is also making a foray into film-making and will debut a short film called “Inherit,” which it describes as a “powerful reflection on the knowledge and financial resource gaps that stand in the way of homeownership for many first-generation homebuyers.”

"In celebration and recognition of National Homeownership Month, we want to empower individuals to take meaningful steps toward financial stability and lasting progress in the home," Griffith continued in the release. "By working alongside trusted community organizations, we can create real change that opens doors for homebuyers and help them build generational wealth."
