Micro-apartments are a strategic choice for some renters rather than just a budget compromise, according to a study by StorageCafe.

Some renters are drawn by lower price points and the appeal of amenity-rich, transit-oriented communities, the data showed, while others are drawn to a low-maintenance lifestyle with convenient access to essential services.

“While affordability and density remain the key drivers behind micro-housing, its value as a tool for addressing homelessness and workforce housing shortages is becoming increasingly evident,” StorageCafe said in the study. “Still, scaling micro-housing remains a regulatory challenge. Many cities have outdated zoning codes or restrictive minimum size requirements that make such developments nearly impossible.”

StorageCafe classifies micro units as rental homes with a footprint no larger than half the average apartment size in that state. Nationwide, the analysis identifies micro-housing units as those measuring under 441 square feet.

Meanwhile, the rental insurance market size grew from $94.79 billion in 2024 to $100.99 billion in 2025 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.5%, according to The Business Research Company.

Growth during the period is attributed to the increasing trend of urbanization, growing awareness about the benefits of renters’ insurance, high incidences of property damage, growing supply of rental properties and legal requirements.

By 2029, the rental insurance market is projected to reach $128.73 billion at a slightly lower CAGR rate of 6.3%, driven by digital insurance platforms, awareness and education initiatives, integration with smart home technology, economic recovery and stability and collaborations with real estate and property management firms.

Major trends during the forecast period include growing demand for customizable policies, expansion of coverage options, increased focus on affordability, the rising importance of customer experience, sustainability and green initiatives, The Business Research Company said.
