A record number of Americans are expected to travel over Memorial Day weekend, according to projections from AAA.

Between Thursday and Monday, about 45.1 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home. That’s up 1.4 million over last year and would set a new record. The previous record was set back in 2005 with 44 million people.

Most people will be driving to get to their destination. About 39 million people — or 87% of travelers — are planning to take road trips.

But many will be flying too: about 3.6 million people are planning to travel by plane over the weekend, up 2% from last year.

An additional 2 million people will travel by train, bus or cruise ship, up 8.5% over last year.

“Memorial Day weekend getaways don’t have to be extravagant and costly,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel, in a statement. “While some travelers embark on dream vacations and fly hundreds of miles across the country, many families just pack up the car and drive to the beach or take a road trip to visit friends. Long holiday weekends are ideal for travel because many people have an extra day off work and students are off from school.”
