Many of the 2025 IIHS Top Safety Picks rank poorly for reliability by Consumer Reports, according to a new report from CarEdge.
The report compared the two different rankings and found, of this year’s 48 IIHS safety picks, only 18 have a reliability score of higher than 50 (out of 100). Eleven of the cars have scores of 30 or lower. The Rivian R1S, a Top Safety Pick+ winner, has a reliability score of just nine.
CarEdge also found that the most popular cars in America often aren’t IIHS safety picks. Of the 25 best-selling cars in the United States last year, just five were selected for the safety award: the Honda Civic, the Honda Accord, the Hyundai Tuscon, the Toyota Tundra and the Subaru Forester.
Other bestsellers, including the Honda CR-V, the Toyota RAV-4, the Ford F-150 and the Chevrolet Silverado, didn’t make the list.
CarEdge says safety rankings should be just one factor consumers consider when making a car purchase.
“Vehicles with high crash-test scores but poor reliability can lead to frustrating ownership experiences, costly repairs, and potential long-term headaches,” the report says. “Before making a purchase, it’s essential to consider both safety and reliability rankings, along with real-world owner feedback.”
