Another insurance CEO has found himself on the receiving end of gun violence after an unknown shooter opened fire on his home.

CCTV footage showed shots being fired at close range at the home of State Accident Insurance Fund Corporation (SAIF) CEO Chip Terhune in the early hours of February 21. Officials said the shooter appeared to be wearing a hoodie or ski mask, and was possibly carrying a light-colored object. They believe the shooter fled in a nearby car, but no description of the vehicle has been provided.

No injuries have been reported.

Fox 29 reports that in a company-wide email obtained by the news outlet, Terhune said the company received a threatening email in the aftermath of the shooting from a person claiming to be the responsible party. He said that while the message doesn’t seem to target a particular person, it does claim that the sender has knowledge of employees’ and their relatives’ names and addresses.

As of publication, the subject is still at large and their motive is unknown.

SAIF is the state of Oregon’s non-profit workers’ compensation insurer. It is also Oregon’s largest workers’ compensation carrier with more than 54,000 policyholders.

The SAIF was created by Senate Bill 255 in 1979. At that time, it became the successor of the previous State Accident Insurance Fund, which was created to transact workers’ compensation business that was formerly handled by the State Industrial Accident Commission (SIAC). The SIAC existed as Oregon’s exclusive workers’ compensation agency from 1914 to 1965.

SAIF is managed by a board of directors that is appointed by the governor and confirmed by the state senate. All revenue for the insurer comes from premiums and investment returns, as it receives no state funding.

Chip Terhune has served as CEO of SAIF since July 2021.
