Almost half of Americans have considered or plan to move abroad in the next two years, according to a new Harris poll.

According to the poll, four in 10 Americans have at least thought about leaving the country in the next few years. Among younger generations — Gen Z and Millennials — one in five report they’re “seriously considering” a move soon.

Among those who are considering leaving, the lower cost of living abroad (49%) and dissatisfaction with current political leadership (48%) were the top two factors influencing them.

Many respondents belonging to minority groups said they fear their rights are at risk in the United States. Among those surveyed, 67% of LGBTQ+ Americans, 58% of female Americans and 57% of BIPOC Americans said their rights are becoming more compromised in America.

According to the poll, the American Dream feels increasingly out of reach for many. Among respondents, 68% said they agreed with the statements “These days I feel like I am surviving instead of thriving” and “Homeownership is no longer attainable for most American citizens.”

Many (52%) believe they could live a higher quality of life living abroad, and 43% of those polled said they believe they would be happier with their life if they moved abroad.

Among Americans who would not move abroad, 62% said family and social connections were their main reason for staying.
