For the second consecutive year, the Northeast was the most popular housing markets in the U.S. in 2024, according to Zillow.
The majority 2024’s top cities are what Zillow calls “exurbs.” These are smaller towns beyond the suburbs but still within commuting distance of a major metro area. They attribute this new preference, at least partially, to an increase in hybrid work models, which have allowed people to explore smaller cities that offer a good balance of affordability and lifestyle amenities that may not have been practical for those who were previously limited by the location of their workplace.
The most popular cities in each geographic region of the U.S. according to Zillow’s findings are:
- Northeast: Manchester, New Hampshire
- West: Sunnyvale, California
- Midwest: Rockford, Illinois
- Southwest: Rio Rancho, New Mexico
- Southeast: Cary, North Carolina
- Mountain region: Fort Collins, Colorado
In 2023, the most popular markets were in West Chester, Pennsylvania; Nashua, New Hampshire; Manchester, New Hampshire; Wethersfield, Connecticut; and West Hartford, Connecticut.
In the slideshow above, we’ll look at which cities were home to the U.S.’s hottest housing markets in 2024, according to Zillow.
