Airports are about to see a surge of travelers for the holidays.

The TSA expects to screen nearly 40 million people between Dec. 19 and Jan. 2. That number is up 6.2% over the same period in 2023.

The holiday surge follows a record-breaking Thanksgiving weekend for airports. The TSA recorded its busiest day ever on Dec. 1, screening more than 3 million people in a single day.

The TSA says airports will likely see the largest crowds on three key dates: Dec. 20, Dec. 27 and Dec. 30.

The agency provided some tips to get through crowded airports more smoothly, including:

  • Arrive early, at least two hours before for domestic flights and three hours ahead for international flights.
  • Don’t forget your ID.
  • Call ahead to request passenger support for family members who might need additional assistance getting through the airport and security screening.
