From social media to the dark web, Americans are worried about their safety online.

A recent survey conducted by Reviews.org found consumers are concerned about cyber criminals, malware and the security of their financial accounts.

Those fears aren’t unwarranted. The survey found many Americans have experienced cyber scams and crimes:

  • 91% of Americans have received a suspicious email or message they believed was a phishing attempt.
  • 45% have experienced unauthorized charges on their credit cards.
  • 30% have had their social media accounts hacked.
  • 27% have had their personal information sold on the dark web.
  • 23% have had their email accounts hacked.
The survey found Americans are taking steps to protect themselves:
  • 72% of Americans avoided public Wi-Fi for sensitive activities.
  • 56% installed antivirus software.
  • 55% have used a VPN.
  • 42% have used a password manager.
Changing passwords regularly is also key to keeping accounts protected, but 44.3% of Americans only change their passwords when required.
