Renters in the United States pay an average of $148 each year, or about $12 monthly, for insurance coverage, NerdWallet reports. As with nearly any kind of coverage, however, rates are affected by the area in which the insured lives. Renters insurance does not cover structural damage, but renter losses are still heavily impacted by factors like an area's vulnerability to natural disasters, severe weather and flooding. The states where renters see the highest average premiums, according to NerdWallet, are:
- Louisiana: $253 per year/ $21 per month
- Mississippi: $252 per year/ $21 per month
- Arkansas: $225 per year/ $19 per month
- Oklahoma: $210 per year/ $18 per month
- Georgia: $194 per year/ $16 per month
