The cost of travel ramped up throughout 2024, with the average fall trip expense increasing by 36% from the year before; from $5,907 in 2023 to just over $8,000 in 2024, Squaremouth reports. Despite that price uptick, the number of people traveling is still up more than 8% this fall. With so much money invested in travel, many choose to purchase a travel insurance policy in order to protect themselves. The average travel policy costs around 5% to 6% of the cost of the trip, Forbes Advisor reports, with slightly higher rates for policies with the most comprehensive coverage. For those who have purchased travel coverage this year, Forbes found that the benefits insureds consider the most important are:
  • Emergency medical (28.2%)
  • Medical evacuation (19.6%)
  • Trip cancellation (18.1%)
  • Trip interruption (12.5%)
  • Travel delay (8.5%)
Travel insurance claims have risen 21% from last year, according to data from Squaremouth. At the same time, travel insurance claim denials have jumped by about 33%. In the slideshow above, we'll look at the top reasons a travel claim may be denied.
