Counties in Texas, Colorado and Missouri are most likely to experience hail damage, according to data compiled by Roof Gnome. Dallas County, Texas; Arapahoe County, Colo., and Tarrant County, Texas are the top three counties in the U.S. most at risk, with Denver County and St. Louis County rounding out the top five. Meanwhile, the listed counties in Texas and Colorado fall in what Roof Gnome calls "Hail Alley," which encompasses the central region of the U.S. from Wyoming to Texas. "Nearly 7,000 hail events occurred in 2023, over 2,500 more than were reported in 2022," the report said. "Scientists predict that the U.S. will see stronger and more frequent hail storms in the coming years due to climate change." Key areas of concern during a hail storm include:
  • Windows and roofs;
  • Hail clogged storm drains, resulting in flooding;
  • Solar panels;
  • Gutters; and
  • HVAC systems.
"Hail can fall up to 100 mph and ranges from the size of a pea to a grapefruit, leading to varying degrees of destruction," the report said. "Just fixing your roof after a hail storm can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars."
