Andreas Berger is being appointed the next group CEO for Swiss Re and will succeed Christian Mumenthaler, who has held the role for eight of his 25 years with the company.

Berger, whose appointment received unanimous board approval, will officially step into his new role on July 1, 2024. When he assumes the group CEO role, Berger will step down as CEO of Swiss Re's corporate solutions division and the successor for that role is currently being sought.

Throughout his tenure at Swiss Re, Berger has consistently achieved positive results and was instrumental in turning around the corporate solutions business unit, according to Jacques de Vaucleroy, Swiss Re's vice chairman of the board of directors.

"He (Berger) has demonstrated a strong focus on execution while at the same time innovating the business with data analytics-based solutions. He will carry forward a culture of performance and achievements and strong leadership values," de Vaucleroy said in a release. "The board's thorough succession planning process has resulted in the appointment of an outstanding candidate for the role of group CEO while it has also demonstrated the strength and depth of Swiss Re's leadership talent."

Before joining Swiss Re in 2019, Berger held leadership positions with Boston Consulting Group, Gerling and Allianz. While with Allianz, he served as CEO of Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty SE's (AGCS) regional unit in London and joined AGCS's board of management in 2011 as chief regions and market office for Central & Eastern Europe, Mediterranean, Africa and Asia.

An active member of numerous industry and business associations, Berger is chairman of the International Insurance Society and sits on the board of Advance, a gender equality in business organization.
