Each year, about 1 in 20 home policyholders will have a claim, according to the Insurance Information Institute's (Triple-I) review of claims data from 2017-2021. During that period, wind and hail were the most frequently seen loss events and accounted for nearly 40% of property damage claims in 2021, Triple-I reported. Around 3% of insureds had a claim due to wind and hail from 2017-2021, with an average claim payment of $12,913. Fire and lightning were responsible for 24.8% of claims in 2021, a year which saw water damage and freezing account for 23.5% of claims, Triple I reported. Although they were less common, fire and lightning claims were the losses with the highest claims severity. Between 2017-2021, the average claims payment following a fire and lighting loss was more than $83,500. The above slideshow highlights nine common mistakes homeowners make when filing an insurance claim, according to Forbes Advisor. Related:
