It's February, and that means it's Insurance Careers Month.

Started back in 2015, the initiative aims to bring awareness about recruiting the next generation of insurance professionals. 

The month kicks off with some positive news for the insurance industry.

For the 24 months ending Dec. 2017, property & casualty carrier employment ranged between 545,000 and 560,000, reaching 556,700. From Dec. 2016 to Dec. 2017, employment was up 1.1%. according to the Insurance Information Institute.

By the numbers

 

  • Employment by life/annuity carriers fell in Dec. 2017 vs Dec. 2016 down -1.3%. Employment in this segment has fallen in seven of the 12 months in 2017.
  • For the 12 months ending Dec. 2017, health carrier employment rose 3.6% The health carrier segment has flourished for decades.
  • The agent/broker segment had 9,600 jobs (up 1.2%) in Dec. 2017 vs Dec. 2016. 
  • Reinsurance carrier employment in the U.S. was down by 100 in Dec. 2017 vs. Dec. 2016 to 25,900.
  • Employment at independent claims-adjusting firms on a year-over-year basis for Dec. 2017 fell by 600 to 59,300.
