We've all been to events that have a networking component. Some may view it as necessary evil and others can't wait to see who they will meet and what new relationships will develop.
I love meeting new people, but I find that I still have to take a deep breath before I enter a large room where I don't know a soul. The good news is that I've found that it's worth taking the plunge, because I have met some fascinating folks.
Recently, a friend on LinkedIn introduced me to someone he'd met at an event. We set up a meeting and by the time we finished, I'd secured a new contributor and he had connected me with three more people.
One of those individuals invited me to a major networking breakfast where I saw some old friends and made some new contacts. My host from that event introduced me to several of his clients because they have expertise in areas that we cover for Claims and PropertyCasualty360.com. From those contacts, I have met several more experts.
Why do I mention this? Because the holidays are full of parties and events where we will be meeting new people. I'm trying to be bolder in these situations. I've found that a warm smile and a good opening question help to build rapport with people. Granted, as a reporter it's probably a little easier for me to come up with an interesting question because I really do care what people think about different topics.
So as you're venturing to your different social events this season, consider who you might meet or who you'd like to meet, and make the most of those opportunities. And if you see me at an industry conference, please make sure to stop me and say hello.
On behalf of all of our staff here at Claims Magazine and PropertyCasualty360.com, we wish you a joyous holiday season and an extremely prosperous 2018.
