Cities in the United States are constantly evolving — and cyclists are a big part of the reason why. As the number of cyclists has grown in recent years, so too does the number of cyclist fatalities. In 2015, a total of 817 cyclists were killed in crashes with motor vehicles. This represents a 13% increase from 2014 and the highest number of cyclists deaths since 1995, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Bike lanes often fall short as cyclists have to weave through moving traffic; on the other hand, many cyclists do not wear a helmet or observe traffic laws, creating a dangerous scenario for both cyclists and drivers on the road.
