The International Risk Management Institute Inc.'s 2016 Construction Risk Conference continued Tuesday at the Orlando World Center Marriott in Florida.
The conference opened Tuesday morning with a general session featuring a panel of construction risk managers moderated by conference Co-Chairman Bill McIntyre.
Called "Lessons Learned in Construction Risk Management," the panel featured Deborah Heden, corporate risk manager of Concord, California-based Conco Cos.; Dick Walterhouse, chief risk officer of Pasadena, California-based Pankow Builders; and Edward Littleton, senior vice president of risk management at London-based Balfour Beatty Construction.

In the panel session, McIntyre asked the panelists about their experiences with managing risk for their companies and the issues that the construction industry faces today. The panelists also talked about their careers in risk management, including their "Ah-ha!" moment where they felt they were on the right career path.
Tuesday's general session concluded with the presentation of the 2016 Words of Wisdom Award. According to IRMI, the award recognizes Construction Risk Conference speakers who consistently receive top praise from attendee evaluations.
McIntyre and conference co-chairman Jack Gibson presented this year's Words of Wisdom Award to Jeff Slivka, president of Hamilton, New Jersey-based New Day Underwriting Managers LLC.

Among the panels and workshops that continued at the conference throughout Tuesday was "Hot Topics in Workers' Compensation," a panel led by Joel Appelbaum, executive vice president and chief content officer at IRMI.
Panelists included Katherine Antonello, chief actuary at the Boca Raton-based National Council on Compensation Insurance; Mark Walls, vice president of communications and strategic analysis at St. Louis-based Safety National; Sonja Guenther, vice president of Wichita, Kansas-based IMA Financial Group Inc.; and James Pocius, attorney at Philadelphia-based law firm Marshall, Dennehey, Warner, Coleman & Goggin.
