Depending on where you live, craft beer has overtaken fine wine as the adult beverage of choice.
And the number of breweries and brewpubs in operation in the United States has reached new levels, according to research from New York City-based financial data company Smartasset.
Most craft brewers are small, independent businesses, according to the Boulder, Colorado-based Brewers Association, with all the insurance needs of a small business, which may present opportunities for insurance agents.
Breweries and brew pubs own or rent property, and they have employees, with all the attendant issues, including workplace safety and workers' compensation. In addition, the breweries and brew pubs have supply chain concerns and business continuity issues.
But where will insurance agents find the most breweries and brewpubs? Surprisingly, Boston — home of the Boston Beer Co. Inc., and brewer of Sam Adams beer — isn't on the list, although the company is credited by some with beginning the craft beer movement in 1984.
This chart shows the number of microbreweries per 100,000 inhabitants and in total across U.S. cities in 2016. Is your city on the list?
