Happy birthday, America. The Declaration of Independence was signed on this day in 1776, and now we celebrate by traveling, barbecuing and watching fireworks. WalletHub has put together some stats on how Americans celebrate the Fourth of July.
As a nation, we eat a lot of hotdogs: 150 million in total. And roughly two-thirds of Americans barbecue adding nearly 900 million pounds of beef and chicken to the All-American feast in the process.
About 43% of Americans plan to partake in a fireworks display. Americans also drink enough to make July 4th the best holiday for beer sales, and that's where things get dicey.
Where there are fireworks and alcohol, injuries are bound to result. About 67% of all fireworks injuries happen within a month of July 4th, with nearly 700 people visiting the emergency room and seven dying.
Roughly 400 people die in Fourth of July car crashes, 41% of which involve alcohol impairment.
