U.S. workers have long been concerned that their jobs are vulnerable to automation, especially assembly line workers who have found themselves replaced by robots.
But it’s not just U.S. workers who are at risk — workers around the world in developing countries are also finding it's a threat to lower-skill industries.
According to a report published in January by Citigroup Global Perspectives and Solutions titled “Technology at Work Version 2.0,” an average of 77% of jobs in China and 69% of jobs in India are vulnerable to automation.
Closer to home, the same report shows that 47% of U.S. jobs are also vulnerable to automation.
Although many cities have managed to adapt to new technology and subsequently thrive, others have been forced into bankruptcy — Detroit, for example. Citigroup’s report identified the top cities across the U.S. that have the highest degree of risk from technology, and the results might surprise you.
If your city is on this list, consider factoring in the threat of technology into your risk management and strategic planning.
