The Washington, D.C.-based American Insurance Association (AIA) said it has appointed Christopher J. Swift to serve a one-year term as chairman of its board of directors.

Swift, who is also chairman and CEO of Connecticut-based Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., succeeds Michael S. McGavick, CEO of XL Group plc, who served as chairman during the past year.

"AIA thanks Mike McGavick for his outstanding stewardship over the past year and is thrilled to have Chris Swift serve as our next chairman," said Leigh Ann Pusey, president and CEO of AIA. "Chris's energy, commitment and proven leadership will be a tremendous asset to AIA and our diverse membership. We're grateful to have his and The Hartford's continued support, as well as the support of all our members, as we work to represent the property-casualty industry before all levels of government."

Swift joined Hartford in March 2010 as executive vice president and chief financial officer. He became CEO in June 2014.

"This is an exciting time for our industry and I am honored to serve as chairman," said Swift. "I look forward to working with the board of directors and AIA staff on important policy issues, such as the pace of technological change, cyber security risk and the changing regulatory environment, each of which has important consequences for consumers, our industry and the regulatory community."

Swift currently serves on the board of the New York City-based Insurance Information Institute. He is also a member of the Dean's Advisory Board at the Villanova School of Business, the Business Council, the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, the Council on Foreign Relations, the Financial Services Roundtable, and the International Insurance Society.
