The Insurance Council of Texas's education foundation awarded five scholarships totaling $7,500 to insurance and risk management students at the University of Texas at Dallas earlier this month.
The Austin, Texas-based property and casualty insurance trade association also provided funding to help establish a chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, an international fraternity for students of insurance, risk management and actuarial science, at the Dallas university.
Tony Gonzalez, president of the ICT Education Foundation, said UT Dallas is quickly becoming one of the state's top universities in producing sought-after insurance and risk management graduates.
"Foundation board members were amazed at the school's rapidly expanding insurance curriculum and commitment," said Gonzalez."Our board was unanimous in rewarding UT Dallas for its new program that will attract quality students who are looking for a financially rewarding career."
A ceremony was held on March 5 to establish the Gamma Iota Sigma chapter, and Gonzalez presented UT Dallas students Thu Nguyen, Nathaniel Bjorge, Mohammed Ahmad, Nate Pham and Hieh Huynh with scholarships.
The scholarship recipients will also be invited to attend ICT's Mid-Year Property & Casualty Symposium on July 13 and 14 in Austin, where they will be given a tour of the Texas Department of Insurance, as well as participate in a speed interview and networking session with insurance companies who are seeking job applicants.
This is not the first time ICT has provided funding for insurance and risk management students. The association said since 2002 its education foundation has awarded close to $1 million in scholarships and academic funding to 393 students at 11 Texas universities, including University of Texas at Austin, Houston University and Baylor University.
