Pool Re will host the inaugural Congress for National Terrorism Reinsurance Pools on Wednesday, Oct. 28 – Friday, Oct. 30, at the Royal Institution in London. Worldwide leaders of national terrorism reinsurance pools will gather to discuss the operational factors affecting the provision of terrorism risk reinsurance.
The aim of the three-day event is to drive the debate on issues affecting worldwide terrorism reinsurance and the role of governments in the provision of terrorism reinsurance. A forum will be provided by the congress to share expertise and best practice, and to discuss closer international collaboration in response to new and evolving terrorist threats. Attendees will include the terrorism reinsurance pools of 14 countries, in addition to representation from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Speakers at the event will include senior political figures, insurance industry professionals and members of the security services.
The discussion will cover a broad spectrum of issues and topics relevant to the provision of terrorism reinsurance and national reinsurance pools. Topics will include:
- How public private partnerships work in practice in other areas of reinsurance
- The terrorist threat to the United Kingdom and the partnership between government and the insurance industry with business, to ensure adequate planning and protection of physical and financial assets.
- The future of Government involvement in terrorism reinsurance around the world
- How modelling techniques are developing in the area of terrorism reinsurance
- Insurance Linked Securities, Retrocession and capital markets
- How do reinsurance pools ensure continued relevance? What pressures exist for other emerging catastrophic risks to be covered?
- How can the international terrorism reinsurance pools better cooperate with each other?
The findings from the congress will be published after the event.
"The reinsurance industry has a long history of evolving in the face of threats and of redefining itself to ensure that it can continue to protect commerce worldwide. Terrorism, which is an increasingly global threat, demands a concerted international response and our objective has been to leverage the experience and expertise developed in national terrorism pools to underpin our response to this threat," said Julian Enoizi, chief Eexecutive of Pool Re. "The Pool Re team and I are very pleased to host the inaugural national terrorism reinsurance pools congress, the aim of which is to support initiatives for closer international collaboration and to share expertise and experience to combat the threat of economic loss resulting from terrorism. The future of terrorism reinsurance is a question lacking a coherent, international response and I hope that, through working together, we can ensure the most informed and appropriate approach for the protection of our various economies."
