California insurance commissioner Dave Jones has appointed George Mueller as the new deputy commissioner for the Department of Insurance's enforcement branch, reports the Sacramento Business Journal.

Mueller replaces Eric Weirich, who retired this past December. He will begin his new role as deputy commissioner on July 20.

In his new role with the Department of Insurance, Mueller will oversee law enforcement and criminal investigations of the insurance industry in California. He will be in charge of more than 400 professionals, including over 200 police officers who investigate fraud in the workers' compensation, auto, homeowner, health, life, annuity and disability insurance sectors. The branch also goes after fraudulent insurance agents.

Mueller most recently served as assistant chief of the bureau of investigation at the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. He earned his bachelor's degree in public administration and a master's degree in public administration with a specialization in judicial administration from the University of Southern California. Mueller is a graduate of the FBI national academy and the Senior Management Institute for Police.

A former police officer for the city of Alhambra, Mueller has experience in fighting insurance, health-care and workers' comp fraud.
