Although the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is predicting a below-normal hurricane season for the Atlantic, coastal residents, property owners and businesses still should prepare to deal with some kind of event this summer.

As Tracy Knippenburg Gillis, Reputational Risk & Crisis Management, Resiliency, and Response Leader, Marsh Risk Consulting, points out, having well-developed, actionable hurricane preparedness and response plans in place before a storm occurs can help to mitigate the effects of a potential catastrophe event. With such plans in place, your organization will be better able to minimize damage to people and property, and recover as quickly as possible.

Marsh has prepared a detailed checklist that risk managers can use as a starting point for the various issues that organizations should be considering during good weather as the 2015 hurricane season approaches.

The checklist reviews action steps and helps you categorize them as “Not Started,” “In Progress” and “Complete.” When you’ve completed the checklist, you’ll have a more accurate picture of how well prepared your organization is to deal with a major catastrophe. The action steps include reviewing your property insurance policy, evaluating property loss control and property security and planning for employee safety.
