On Monday a slow-moving storm — dubbed "Winter Storm Marcus" — made its way through the Boston area, helping the city set the record for the most snowfall in 30 days. And it isn't over — another storm system is threatening to dump more snow over the area on Thursday.

As of midday Monday, Logan International Airport recorded 69.2 inches of snow, the most ever in 30 days, Matthew Belk, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Taunton, Mass. told Bloomberg. The previous record was 58.8 inches in the period that ended on Feb. 7, 1978.

Three major winter storms have hit the Northeast, especially Massachusetts, since Jan. 27. The snow has been wreaking havoc on ground transportation and air travel, and has forced schools to close for days at a time.

To make matters worse, after an expected snowstorm hits on Thursday, temperatures will plunge to near zero degrees Fahrenheit by the weeked, Bill Simpson of the weather service's Taunton office told Bloomberg. Early predictions say Thursday's storm won't drop as much snow as the past few storms have, but "even a six- to 12-inch dump with falling temperatures isn't good," Paul Kocin, a meteorologist with the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Md., said.

The plunging tempereaters will prevent the existing snow from melting, and any amount that continues to fall will only add to the state's struggle to keep streets clean and rail lines open.
