Here's a short story/television news piece from CBS News. It touches upon a very common topic on the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy: flood insurance. It's also a good example of how the media sometimes mixes economic and insured losses.

Here's a story from Michael Muskal at the Los Angeles Times, which breaks down Sandy and the recovery efforts in several ways under the headline, “Superstorm Sandy: Recovery, stuggles continue one year later.”

For some Sandy victims, insurance falls short,” “Sandy One Year Later: Homeowners still battling with insurance companies,” “One year later, Sandy victims battle insurance company“ are just some of the headlines out there today. These are from The Miami Herald, News 12 Long Island and the Jersey Journal, respectively.

The theme is obvious and common. Disputes with insurers makes for good news stories–deservedly or undeservedly. Stories about the overall success of the private insurance industry in handling and settling claims fairly does not.

If you've got an interest in the science of Superstorm Sandy, you may want to look to the Union of Concerned Scientists. A blog from Rachel Cleetus, senior climate economist, outlines some flood lessons learned from Sandy. The take away: Don't delay NFIP reforms, she says. “We cannot legislate a delay in sea level rise,” she writes.
