Based on a large study of metropolitan areas, Farmer's Insurance Group of Cos. ranked Bethesda, Md., at the top of its list of the “Most Secure Places to Live in the U.S.

The rankings, which are based on economic stability, crime statistics, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, housing depreciation, life expectancy and other criteria were used to determine the most secure large metropolitan areas in the country.

For the seventh consecutive year, the Bethesda area has earned a ranking in the top 20 metropolitan areas, and has earned a top ten spot each year since 2007. Grand Rapids, Mich., and Pittsburgh round out the top three.
