The Chicago Tribune will pay $425,000 to 46 TribLocal reporters who claimed they did not receive adequate compensation for overtime hours worked between February 2009 and September 2012.
Carolyn Rusin, a former TribLocal reporter, sued the Tribune under the Fair Labor Standards Act and Illinois Minimum Wage Law. She will be paid $10,000 for bringing the case and $2,000 for her individual claim. A court hearing in June will decide final approval.
Many of the reporters involved in the case are no longer employed by TribLocal. The Chicago Tribune outsourced most of TribLocal's coverage to Journatic in April 2012, cutting half of its 40 editorial staff positions.
