Kentucky has become the 11th state to permit drivers to use electronic versions of their insurance cards to show proof of coverage.
Gov. Steve Beshear signed the bill, HB 164, last week.
Kentucky joins 10 states that now permit drivers to use either paper or their cell phone to show proof of insurance during a traffic stop.
Regional Vice President for the Property Insurers Association of America, Jeffrey Junkas, calls the new law good news for consumers and the courts because it will avoid unnecessary fix-it tickets for drivers who did not have their insurance card at the time of a traffic stop. The law also allows insurers to stay current with technology and offer consumers the convenience of going paperless, he says.
