Butler's not really a one 'n' done team, having gone to the national title game in both 2010 and 2011.
But Kevin Schwartz, studying risk management, sank a half court shot on his first try – earning him $18,000 from State Farm.
Three thousand fans turned out Saturday morning at Hinkle Fieldhouse as the Butler Bulldogs hosted ESPN's College GameDay show in advance of its matchup against Gonzaga. As part of the festivities, a Butler student was given the opportunity to make a half court shot. Rules stated he could shoot as many attempts possible in 18 seconds.
But Schwartz didn't need the full time – he netted on his first try.
Schwartz, a junior from Oak Park, Ill., is the first in the 9-year history of the show to connect on his first attempt. He also snapped a 4-year failure streak of students on GameDay.
No stranger to the basketball court, Schwartz is part of the scrimmage team that plays against the Butler women's basketball team. He was picked for the contest about 20 minutes before the segment.
His half-court prowess calls to mind the attempt Bulldog Gordon Hayward nearly made at the end of the 2010 NCAA championship game against Duke. Ironically, Schwartz grew up as a Duke fan.
