The New Jersey shore will never look exactly the way residents and vacationers remember it. Photos from Gov. Chris Christie's office reveal the famous Seaside Heights boardwalk is devastated. Houses were knocked from foundations by storm surge all along the shoreline.
The following photos are from the governor's Oct. 30 helicopter tour of the destruction before he stopped in Belmar and Avalon, N.J. to meet with local officials.
All photos taken by Tim Larsen of the governor's office.

Most of the boardwalk's piers were destroyed, and many of the rides fell into the ocean.
Here's a Facebook post on Oct. 31 from the Seaside Heights Fire Department:
“Here we are after it all. Seaside is a total loss. Both piers collapsed. Boardwalk destroyed. Beach is up to boulevard. Houses, cars, personal belongings floating around. Still 4ft of water at least around. Pelican Island is underwater. No access on or off the bridge. We've been doing hundreds of water rescues. A lot of our guys saving people and standing by watched as we lost everything, Our houses and possessions. We'll get through this somehow.”

Here in Belmar, N.J. the shoreline has crept westward.
That was a street to the left of the houses. And there was a boardwalk.
