The number of Americans working from home increased to 13.4 million in 2010—9.5 percent of all workers in the country—compared to 9.5 million in 1999.
Almost a quarter of those working from home are in management, business and financial occupations, and a little under half are self-employed.
Metropolitan areas in the West, Southwest and Southeast had the highest percentage of home-based workers.
Among the nation's metropolitan areas, Boulder, Colo., had the highest percentage of home-based workers at 10.9 percent.
