Happy New Year everyone, and welcome to the first issue of NU in 2012.
Appropriately for this time of fresh starts, you'll notice some changes to the magazine that we think will give you a much better content experience going forward.
In the front of the magazine (affectionately known around here as the "news well"), we give you, as always, the top stories of the week. But turn the page, and you'll see we now also offer you the latest and most important news in key P&C categories—such as Markets, Agents & Brokers, Claims and Risk Management (you'll also regularly find reports on breaking developments in Technology, as well).
We hope this new approach further positions NU as your one-stop, weekly source for a truly 360-degree perspective on the industry, offering important insights for carriers, producers, buyers—and the claims and IT professionals who support them (and maybe the odd layperson out there who just really loves insurance).
And next week, we'll introduce another exciting element in the news section: a single page that encapsulates all the critical industry happenings of the past seven days. We know how busy you all are, and the goal of this page of essential information is to make sure you can stay up to date on the news you need—even if you only have a few minutes to spare (though we recommend setting aside at least 20 hours a week for the full print-and-Web experience).
Moving to the other end of the magazine: The last page has long been reserved for our "Final Say"—some stimulating opinions from industry experts. Given the popularity of this feature (and we believe this week's contribution on strategies for selling multiple coverages to customers is an absolute must-read), we're, of course, keeping it.
In fact, we're expanding the number of pages we set aside in "the back of the book" for commentary from industry pros (and provocateurs). On page 25, for example, we invite you to meet some of our top bloggers from our Web site, PropertyCasualty360.com—they're good people to get to know, and we'll now be featuring the best of our blog posts every week. And on the preceding page, you'll discover an interesting column from a figure who serves as a state representative—and who asks the challenging question, "Does Your Legislator Understand You?"
Throughout this issue, you'll see numerous prompts to our digital subscribers to "click for more." They'll get expanded answers from our roster of risk experts discussing the upcoming year's top opportunities and concerns; in our Energy insurance pages, they'll access exclusive interviews with experts on covering natural gas, ethanol and solar risks; and in our cover feature that says it's time to say "so long" to the soft market, they'll have quick links to related stories.
And throughout the year, I'll be frequently and firmly encouraging you (but hopefully not crossing the line to haranguing) to consider becoming a digital subscriber. You'll get your hands on our hot news even faster—and you will be able to enjoy plenty of multimedia extras that just don't play in print.
On a final note, observers of our masthead will notice a new name high up on the list: Shawn Moynihan, who recently joined us as executive managing editor—and who brings with him many years' experience as an award-winning business journalist. Please join me in welcoming Shawn to the NU team and the P&C family.
