Turkey should not be the primary concern on Thanksgiving Day. The safety of family, friends, and the home should be.
According to claims data from State Farm Insurance, more cooking fires occur on Thanksgiving than any other day of the year. Turkey, however, is not the main culprit, it is actually simple mistakes that humans make during meal preperation.
Increasing the risk for disaster is the popularity of turkey frying. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says deep fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year. Another growing concern is hot oil splatters, which can cause serious burns or an adult and even life threatening injuries to a child.
Both the NFPA and State Farm have posted safety tips on their websites to assist homeowners in keeping this Thursday's festivities safe. Additionally, State Farm lists a state-by-state breakdown of such blazes.
