Hurricane Rina has formed in the western Caribbean, becoming the 17th named storm of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season.

According to the National Hurricane Center's extended forecast, the storm is expected to strengthen to a major hurricane sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday before striking the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico later in the week.

Catastrophe modeler Risk Management Solutions notes there is a “large degree of uncertainty” regarding the track forecast, but the current NHC forecast shows the storm possibly turning back toward the direction of Florida after striking the Yucatán Peninsula

Guy Carpenter's CAT-i report notes that it is too soon to tell whether the storm will threaten oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico.
