In my mind, the world is becoming a riskier place. As the recent events in Norway show, it's very difficult to stop a crazed person with weapons and a willingness to die for their cause. That could happen anywhere….and it has!
If you are speaking from strictly the perspective of risk management, I also think the world is becoming a riskier place. New technology brings about new liabilities and new risks to manage. Risks that were never envisioned (major earthquake followed by a major tsunami in Japan) become reality. Risk-management practices must constantly evolve to keep up with emerging new risks. Even risks that have been around for years, such as workers' compensation, continue to get more complex as time passes.
Risk managers need to stay vigilant and keep abreast of the changing times.
