The National Association of Professional Allstate Agents, Inc. (NAPAA) has formally approved plans to affiliate itself with the Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO.
NAPAA and the OPEIU say NAPAA's board held a teleconference call and approved the affiliation.
More than 94 percent of NAPAA's more than 1,200 members approved affiliation with the union in and Aug. 17 vote.
The groups say the affiliation agreement officially takes place on Sept. 1, granting membership in OPEIU, the national AFL-CIO and all State Federations of Labor.
In a statement, Jim Fish, executive director of NAPAA, calls the affiliation “a bellwether and should serve as a wake-up call to all captive carriers throughout the insurance industry.”
OPEIU International President Michael Goodwin adds, “We look forward to working with NAPAA to better serve their members by providing the legal and legislative support necessary to level the playing field and ensure they receive the wages and working conditions they've earned and deserve.”
