We—and by "we" I mean humans—love lists. As intensely social, status-conscious animals, something buried deep in our DNA makes us relish rankings of the best and the biggest or the weakest and the worst.

And one of our industry's most-anticipated lists is NU's annual ranking of the P&C world's largest players by premium volume (see page 14). It's a data goldmine—pure, unadulterated catnip for fans of performance figures and telling statistics (and who, in the insurance field, doesn't that describe?).

Compiling and analyzing the list is a herculean task, and I want to single out the efforts of our managing editor (and certified actuary) Susanne Sclafane, who has been buried in these numbers the past few weeks—and who only recently has emerged with these lists that boil down immense mountains of data into clear and concise intelligence about how our largest companies are doing.

To offer this list each year, we also depend mightily on our corporate sibling—the indefatigable number experts at Highline Data. It's great to have friends like this in the family.

So whether you're reading this late-July issue pool-side on your tablet—or at your desk, wishing you were at the pool—take your time and dive deep into this statistical bonanza of combined ratios, net-premiums written and growth (or decline) percentages. And because we all can't resist seeing winners and, um, not-winners, don't miss our "Leaders" and "Laggards" charts on page 13.

And what kind of an editorial on the appeal of Top Lists would be complete without a Top List of its own? So while our Top 100 list is our flagship ranking, here is my own appraisal of the best lists we have run this year on our website, PropertyCasualty360.com—no easy task since we have great "best of" content nearly every week. Digital readers, of course, can click right though to the articles.
