Eleanor Kitzman, a former director of the South Carolina Department of Insurance, has been appointed insurance commissioner in Texas.
Gov. Rick Perry says Kitzman's term will begin Aug. 15 and last until Feb. 1, 2013.
Most recently Kitzman was the executive director of the South Carolina Budget and Control Board. Before that she was employed by Goldman Sachs.
Kitzman assumes the role in Texas left vacant by Mike Geeslin, who announced in January that he would be leaving the post.
According to Perry's office, Kitzman, of Austin, is a former clerk for the Texas Supreme Court and past associate with law firm Akin, Gump, Strauss and Feld, which has an insurance practice. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Houston and law degree from South Texas College of Law.
Mark Hanna of the Insurance Council of Texas says Kitzman "appears to be uniquely qualified to serve as Texas insurance commissioner." He adds that ICT looks forward to working with her as she "tackles one of the toughest jobs in Texas government."
Fred C. Bosse, Southwest region vice president for the American Insurance Association, says of Kitzman, "Her tenure as South Carolina's insurance commissioner, coupled with her efforts to reform the state's auto and coastal insurance systems, uniquely position her to run TDI."
