Pennsylvania has extended workers' compensation coverage to allow officers of a  limited liability company and partnerships to obtain the insurance.

Gov. Tom Corbett signed the bill into law June 30 with an effective date of Aug. 29.

Among supporters of the legislation was the Insurance Agents & Brokers of Pennsylvania.

In a statement, Tim Burris, chairman of the Insurance Agents & Brokers of Pennsylvania, says, "Passage of this legislation is a significant victory for member agents and their clients. LLCs and partnerships are growing business models, and before this, they were exempted from compulsory coverage in the Workers' Compensation Act."

The association argued that its agency members were concerned with the inability to write the insurance for their clients, and themselves.

The law allows private companies and the State Workers Insurance Fund to write coverage.
